If you haven’t heard, Instagram just released it’s newest feature – Reels! Although Instagram Reels is new to the United States, it has been a feature for Instagram users in countries like France, Brazil and Germany for some time now.
Instagram Reels allows you to create 15-second videos that you can share with your friends, family and followers! Reels is very similar to TikTok, which rumor has it may be banned in the U.S. within the next few months. You can post your Reels to your Instagram Stories and/or feed, and there is even a new tab on your profile where all of your Instagram Reels can be found, similar to IGTV.
Currently, the Instagram Reels algorithm is similar to that of TikTok’s, where you will see your followers Reels first and then Reels from accounts that Instagram thinks you may want to engage with. The explore page now has its own Reels feature so you can now spend hours upon hours scrolling through videos!
If you are familiar with TikTok, you’ll be able to figure out how to create your first Instagram Reel in no time. If you aren’t, don’t worry! Follow these quick and easy steps below to get started on Instagram Reels.
Open up your Instagram Stories and slide over to the “Reels” section. Before you even start creating, you are able to choose your music on the left-hand side of the screen. You may also create your own audio or you can use another user’s audio by visiting the audio on their Reel.
Note: if you choose to use your own audio and you have a public account, you are allowing other users to use your audio for their own video.
Next, you can choose whether you want to upload videos or boomerangs to your Reel or you can record a new video in real-time. If you choose the latter option, you are able to select your timer and countdown so you can record hands-free. Just like Instagram stories, you are able to choose from different Instagram effects when recording your Reels. Once you have finished uploading or recording your clips, you are then able to choose whether you want to speed up the clips, put them in slow-motion or leave them as they are!
Next, you are able to add text, stickers and even GIFs! You are also able to select the duration of time you want your text, GIFs and stickers to appear. As you can see in the example below, the caption I created will appear on the Reel for the duration of the two white lines. After the time passes those two lines, you’ll see the text fade into the background. This will help you align your text, stickers and GIFs!
Once you have completed shooting and editing your Reel, you are ready to post! There are a few different options on how to post your Reels: You can post it to your Instagram stories, to your actual feed or simply to the Reels section of your profile.
Note: if you have a private account, you will only be able to share your Reels to your feed with your followers.
And there you have it! Creating Instagram Reels might seem intimidating and overwhelming at first but you’ll get the hang of it in no time. We can’t wait to see how Reels change Instagram. Be sure to check out Atlys Media’s first-ever Instagram Reel!
