There is a new social media platform on the rise: Tik Tok. You might be someone who is already on the app and slightly addicted to scrolling through the entertaining videos, or you might be someone wondering what “Tik Tok” is. We’re here to give you the inside scoop on this new social media platform and how you can utilize it for your brand.

 

WHAT IS TIK TOK:

 

Tik Tok (formerly known as Musical.ly) is a short-form video-sharing platform popular among Generation Z where users can create and share videos with friends. Tik Tok’s mission is to “inspire creativity and bring joy.” It encourages users to post anything from dancing and lip synching videos to funny skits or viral challenges. 

Music is a huge part of Tik Tok. The app allows users to make videos to snippets of songs that Tik Tok licenses. Users may also upload their own audio for their video. 

The app is most comparable to Vine, which Twitter owned and shut down in 2017. Tik Tok currently has more than 500 million active users worldwide and more than 1.5 billion app downloads on the app store and Google Play. TikTok has a minimum user age of 13.

 

HOW IT WORKS:

 

After you create an account, you will see there are 5 main pages: home, discover, + (create), inbox and me. 

 

1) THE HOME PAGE

The home page is essentially Tik Tok’s newsfeed. You can scroll through videos on the “for you” page, which features suggested videos from users based on what you typically watch, like and share. *Warning* This page can be extremely addictive! You can easily spend hours scrolling through the endless entertaining videos on the for you page.

You can also scroll through the “following” page, which will only show videos from users that you follow.

2) THE DISCOVER PAGE

On the discover page (similar to Instagram’s explore page) you can search for users, videos, sounds and hashtags. One unique feature of the discover page is that it calls out hashtags that are trending in a given week. Being able to see what is trending serves as a source of inspiration for other users to create their own videos following the trend or theme.

For example: As you can see in this screenshot below, #photography101 is a trending hashtag this week. Every video that includes this hashtag in the caption will show up if you click on #photography101. The videos with the most engagement (views and likes) will show up first. 

 

           

 

3) THE CREATE PAGE

The create page is where you create your own Tik Tok! You can record your video in one long clip or separate your video into different clip segments. If you have a video you want to post already saved on your phone, you can upload it to the Tik Tok video editor. Each Tik Tok video clip can be up to 15 seconds long, but users can combine multiple clips to create a montage video up to 60 seconds long.

Tip: Not sure where to start? Click on “sounds” at the top of the create page to find popular sounds or songs that you can use as background music for your video. You can choose a sound before you film your video, or you can add it in after you finish filming.

 

           

 

4) THE INBOX

Here you can see which users liked your videos or followed you. You can also message other users and send Tik Tok videos to their inboxes.

 

5) ME

This is your Tik Tok profile, which serves as a hub for all the videos you have created. You can also see your “likes” (all the videos you have liked on Tik Tok) if you click on the heart icon. Refer back to your “likes” if you want to easily find a video you saved to share with friends!

WHY IS TIK TOK BECOMING SO POPULAR?

 

Video content is increasing on all social platforms, so it is no surprise that Tik Tok’s all-video platform is quickly gaining traction. The app gives all users the chance to be content creators, and if their videos take off they can become “Tik Tok famous” fairly easily. The concept of “going viral” is a huge goal for users on the app, and it is much easier to achieve on Tik Tok than it is on other popular social platforms like Instagram and Facebook. People make their own versions of trends and viral challenges with the hopes creating something that will lead to a ton of likes, views and comments.

Even celebrities have joined in on the fun and are starting to make their own Tik Tok videos.

WAYS TO USE IT FOR YOUR BRAND

 

1) ADVERTISE ON TIK TOK

Brands can create in-feed ads on the app. Tik Tok ads appear in the news feed as a user scrolls through the for you page. At first glance, most ads seem like normal Tik Tok videos. 2) CREATE CONTENT / PARTICIPATE IN TRENDS

Do some research on what is trending on the discover page and re-create a trending video for your brand! Use relevant hashtags to help your video be more discoverable on Tik Tok.

3) PARTNER WITH TIK TOK INFLUENCERS

Influencer marketing is another way to grow your brand on Tik Tok. Most of the popular Tik Tok creators have a significantly higher amount of followers on Tik Tok than they do on Instagram.  Business Insider created a list of 38 popular Tik Tok creators to check out when looking into influencer marketing on Tik Tok. But similar to all influencer marketing – size is not always everything. So make sure to find influencer partners who align with your brand and goals!
